Artificial nests: who needs them?

Dear friends, we remind you that the Notivory Foundation team is implementing a set of environmental measures to preserve the Red Book birds of Russia, within which we plan to install artificial nests on the Simka River (Vladimir region).

So, why do we need artificial nests?

The main task of artificial nests is to preserve populations of rare bird species in conditions of a shortage of natural nesting sites. Our main idea is to create nests in which rare waterfowl can comfortably accommodate and breed offspring, and in the future their chicks, obeying instinct, will return to their homeland to breed their offspring.

Artificial nests are of closed and open type. You are probably familiar with closed nests. They are wooden houses or boxes, for example, birdhouses.

For our Project, we will use open-type nests, which are platforms made of various materials, for example, straw, lumber, metal mesh. The choice of material and model of an open nest depends on many factors.

On May 14, the Notivory expedition group, together with an ornithologist and a specialist in the field of nature conservation, will go on an expedition, conduct research and install the necessary model of nests, think over the places and methods of their location.

If you are interested in the process of making an artificial nest, stay with us, we will definitely tell you about it in the next news!

The project is being implemented using a grant from the President of the Russian Federation for the development of civil society provided by the Presidential Grants Fund.
