Downhill skiing is one of the most popular winter activities.

Downhill skiing is one of the most popular winter activities. But it also turned out to be one of the most vulnerable in the face of global warming.
Over the past 100 years, the temperature on the planet has risen by 1 ° C, which led to the melting of glaciers and a decrease in snow cover in the mountains. The area of glaciers in Europe has decreased by 2 times compared to 1850, and snow falls at an altitude of up to 1600m by 20% less. According to some estimates, by 2050 all sports complexes located at an altitude of less than 1200m will have to be closed.
In order to prolong the season and provide snow-covered slopes for vacationers, ski resorts have to resort to the help of snow cannons that create artificial snow cover. A huge amount of water and electricity is spent on this. Snow generators use 379 liters of water per minute, 3.5 to 4.3 kW of energy is needed to generate 1 m3 of artificial snow.
And this is not the only contribution of ski resorts to global warming. In addition to creating artificial snow cover, resources are spent on maintaining the infrastructure of resorts (hotels, restaurants, ski lifts). Snow trucks leveling the tracks at night burn up to 19 liters of gasoline per hour, increasing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Another problem is the invasion of wildlife and the development of new high-altitude territories. For the equipment of trails, lifts and the construction of hotels, the forest is cut down on the slopes of the mountains. This leads to soil erosion and the death of Alpine vegetation. In addition, the presence of humans disturbs the animals and birds that live in the remaining forests on the slopes, forcing them to leave their homes and go deep into the forest.
Some ski resorts, realizing the problem, are trying to reduce their own contribution to global warming and for this they are switching to alternative energy sources and building new gondola lifts designed to lift small groups of tourists.
What can we do with you, going to a ski resort?
✅️ To get to the place by train instead of plane. Carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere will be less.
✅Choose resorts that are environmentally “friendly”, which minimally use artificial snow and take measures to save resources and restore nature around the complex. The more people make such a choice, the more incentives there will be for other resorts to introduce similar measures. Or close down due to a lack of customers.
✅️ Do not litter on the slopes. A cigarette butt thrown at a high altitude decomposes for up to 5 years.
✅Respect the local nature and use only specially equipped trails for the descent, so as not to disturb the inhabitants of the mountain slopes and not damage the vegetation.
