Hot ocean
Do you know where 90% of the heat entering the atmosphere of our planet goes? The ocean swallows it up. The same thing happens with excess heat that accumulates in the atmosphere due to the greenhouse effect. But the capacity of this huge reservoir is not unlimited. Already, there is more heat at a depth of several tens of meters than in the entire atmosphere.
The water temperature in the world ocean is breaking all records. Usually the ocean warms up in March. The previous thermal record was set in 2016, but in August 2023, the average daily global ocean water temperature exceeded this value. And probably a new record will be set in March 2024.
Alarm signals come from different parts of the planet. So, in Florida, the water temperature off the coast was like in a hot tub - 38.4 °C. This has already caused a mass death of corals.
An increase in temperature leads to cascading changes: melting of ice, which is involved in the reflection of sunlight from the surface of the planet, ocean acidification, sea heat waves and rising ocean levels.
Whales and fish in search of cooler water are moving from their usual habitats, which can negatively affect food chains. Predatory animals, including sharks, are becoming more aggressive.
Today, the temperature rise has reached 1.1°C, and approximately 60% of marine ecosystems have already been degraded. Warming by 1.5 °C threatens to destroy 70-90% of coral reefs, and warming by 2 °C means their complete destruction.
In addition, increased ocean heating leads to extreme weather events: droughts, floods, storms.
Scientists predict that in the next 5 years the world ocean will set new temperature records, and in order to prevent this, coordinated actions are needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and switch to "green" energy.
