World ocean-world problems
How does the mask mode affect the environment and the ocean?
Today, the Covid-19 pandemic has overshadowed many serious problems and the amount of medical waste in the world is growing at a tremendous rate. To protect against the virus for security purposes, we use masks and sanitizers every day. And this is absolutely correct, because this is how we take care of ourselves and our loved ones!However, from the point of view of ecology, a complex of problems arises: production volumes are growing, the duration of use of such protective equipment is on average several hours, after which it is difficult to dispose of them. Medical masks are made of polypropylene fibers that do not decompose for years. This waste can clog drainage systems and lead to the death of marine life. For example, only in Moscow, at least 18 tons of such waste is generated every day.Everyone knows how plastic pollutes the world's oceans. According to statistics, every year 8 million tons of plastic garbage enters The world's oceans. The unprotected flora and fauna of The world's oceans is in danger. Well-known eco-activist Harry Stokes gives real figures: his colleagues found 70 used masks on 100 meters of coastline.Medical institutions have special systems for the disposal of protective equipment. But, unfortunately, such a system is not yet available to everyone on the planet. So what can we do to save the ocean?
Here are some tips that will help you not only protect yourself from COVID-19 and save your money, but also make your consumption responsible:
1. Use only 2-3 reusable masks instead of a dozen disposable ones.Importantly! Pay attention to the features of reusable masks:
- After use, the mask must be washed with soap or detergent, then treated with a steam generator or iron with steam supply function. The mask should not remain wet, so at the end it must be ironed with a hot iron, without the function of steam supply;
- After two or three hours of constant use, the mask must be changed, so take a few of these masks with you.
2. Fortunately, the times of difficulties and lack of protective equipment have passed: today you can buy sanitizers with a volume of 5 liters.
What are the advantages?
- First, it is much more profitable than buying bottles of 100-200 ml.
- Secondly, using one compact container with the possibility of multiple replenishment, you significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste.
And finally:
No one can handle Covid-19 or ocean pollution alone. But there are 7.5 billion of us on Earth, and if each of us is aware of our responsibility, we can prevent a great disaster.
