Nike and Puma have abandoned the use of kangaroo leather for the production of boots

Good news for conservationists: the largest manufacturers of sports shoes Puma and Nike have decided not to produce football boots made of kangaroo leather anymore. This material is very popular among sports brands, as it is more elastic, strong and durable than cow or goat leather. Nike used it in the Tiempo line, Puma used it in the KING line.

Kangaroos, unlike goats, sheep and cows, are not bred on farms, but are shot in the wild. They are not considered a threatened species. The number of these marsupials in Australia exceeds the human population, and they multiply quite quickly. Therefore, the Australian Government has introduced a special program to regulate their numbers. As part of this program, several million animals are shot annually. The method of shooting is considered humane: hunters shoot animals in the head, causing instant death.

Nike will replace kangaroo skin with a new patented synthetic material.
Experts believe that following Nike and Puma, other, smaller brands can also abandon the use of kangaroo skin.

I must say that the third giant of the sportswear industry, Adidas, has not yet made any statements about the rejection of kangaroo skin in the production of its Adidas Predator boots, although in 2003 and 2007 it was already a participant in related lawsuits. They were initiated by animal welfare organizations. In 2007, the California Supreme Court banned the sale of kangaroo skin boots in the state.

It is possible that legal issues have become one of the incentives to make a decision on the replacement of materials for Nike. The company is headquartered in Oregon. At the beginning of 2023, a bill was passed there prohibiting the sale of goods made from kangaroo skin. But in any case, this decision has been brewing for a long time. The company began to reduce the production of goods from this material back in 2021.

Also in 2020, they decided to no longer use kangaroo skin in their Prada and Versace collections.
