Observation of identity

Shantar Islands is a national park, which is an archipelago in the Sea of Okhotsk, located in the Khabarovsk Territory. The archipelago, whose land area is more than 2500 km2, includes not only 23 islands, but also many tiny areas and unnamed sea rocks-kekurs.

In hot July, you can notice an iceberg floating by, and summer night frosts cover puddles on the archipelago with ice. On the warmest days, the water temperature of the Sea of Okhotsk, which is under the ice for most of the year, does not exceed 11 °C.

The real riot of nature is manifested in the tides: the height of the tidal wave reaches 6 meters, completely hiding some islands. Unstoppable sea waves crashing into the mouths of rivers are able to reverse their flow.
Every island of the archipelago is inhabited by bears. In addition to brown predators, foxes, ermines, sables, wolverines, wolves and raccoon dogs live on Shantars.

It is impossible to count the number of birds on the islands. On the archipelago there are not only the rarest Okhotsk snails, but also gulls, ducks, whooping swans, grouse, peregrine falcons, gyrfalcons and white-shouldered eagles.

If bears dominate on land, then the sea layer belongs to whales. The sea is inhabited by baleen whales - humpback, gray, southern, Greenland and fin whales, as well as toothed whales - killer whales and belugas. In this area, the number of bowhead whales capable of living up to 200 years does not exceed 400 individuals. The thing is that commercial hunting of these majestic mammals, currently under protection, was actively conducted earlier.

Did you know that killer whales have a certain hierarchy in families and clans? There is a myth about the bloodthirstiness of killer whales, but not a single case of these cetaceans attacking humans in the wild has been recorded.

Seals, sea lions and spotted seals raise their offspring on the Shantar Islands, forming whole rookeries.
